The issue is not that complex systems are not a requirement. Specially in enterprise space the need to satisfy so many unique and non-scalable use cases makes products complex as every enterprise customer refuses to accept the industry norm for a specific usecase or even those already in use by their peers. Hence it pushes a lot of complexity down the product team's way that struggles with hand crafting one solution after solution without being able to pick a pattern that could be used to build a scalable solution. So my take is complexity being good or bad doesn't matter. Complexity certainly is a huge obstacle when trying to scale your company. It's a dead weight tied to your organization at times that limits its progression.
